Well not exactly.
See, I’m a late adopter. I wait to update my phone, a new Mac OS and other emerging tech to let the rest of the world work out the kinks. And I have put off upgrading the home theater TV to 4K because there wasn’t a lot of media out there in 4K. Or so I thought.
Then I got a Costco flyer, considered the fact that the Winter Olympics are a couple months away and bit on a Sony 77” OLED 4K TV. I also upgraded my Apple TV to the 4K model.
All set.
Not so fast. My AV Receiver was HD so if I wanted to switch 4K AV sources that would need an upgrade as well. Fine.
All set.
The first videos I watched in 4K were YouTube travel videos shot in 8K and downscaled to 4K…places like Stockholm, Italy and Dubai. It was awesome.
Next I clicked over to the streaming networks. I was pleasantly surprised that many of the shows I had been watching in HD, recognized the new gear and 4K was the norm. Pretty cool.
One of the coolest finds was the Packers Thursday Night game a few weeks ago. Turns out Fox shoots the game in 1080 60P and then uses high quality upscalers to go to 4K then broadcasts it to the Fox Sports app in 4K on the Apple TV. It was the clearest football game I had ever seen on a TV set.
The main reason for the upgrade was for the upcoming Winter Olympics. I went from a beautiful 60” HD Plasma to the 77” OLED. It took a bit of fiddling with the settings to get perfect color and sound, but the upgrade was a huge one indeed.
Turns out I have become a bit of a 4K snob…..what, the show is not in 4K? Not in this house! Next up is a 4K Blue-Ray player for some epic film viewing.
Needless to say, it was a long time coming, and if you haven’t gone 4K in your home theater experience, it is time. The content is out there, and you won’t be disappointed and will never look back!
