Making the Cut – Editing Strategies to Create Award-Winning Videos

Join us as we take a closer look at the editing strategies & techniques used in our WAVE Awards Judge’s Choice videos. You will hear how each creator designed award-winning projects through specific editing techniques that make each of these projects a showstopper!
Judge’s Choice – Kingdom Filmworks
The Glove Lab
Mike Palzkill (DP) and Kyle Stoffel (Editor) will share how a small Kingdom Filmworks crew traveled to The Glove Lab in Phoenix, Arizona to capture the world of baseball glove repair and the deep care that Chris Petroff brings to his craft. They will walk through the production process with a special focus on post-production, highlighting how they distilled hours of footage shot for a longer-form documentary into a tight branded piece that helps Chris share his work with a wider audience.
Judge’s Choice – Bonnie Willison
Spring fish harvest with the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin
Bonnie is a producer, videographer, and editor who has 10 years of experience working with universities, environmental groups, and nonprofits. She often works solo, tackling writing, run-and-gun filming, and editing to produce educational and documentary-style pieces. For the past six years, Bonnie has worked for UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Sea Grant, where she produces videos and podcasts about the Great Lakes and Wisconsin’s waters. Bonnie will walk us through her process, including project backgrounds, shooting at night in a fast-changing environment, culturally attuned editing and storytelling, pacing, use of scenes and more.
